Montana cold smoke

Yesterday Sonny and I did a little skin tour to flower point and skied the ridge. Deep snow up high but in major need of more snow in the second pitch to make it worth wild. Trust me we were bushwhacking our way out in spots down low. The first two shots are from Thursday’s chest deep snow and the blue sky images are from today.

Enjoy.

Sonny getting a nice face shot.

Check out how deep his pole is in the snow – super soft.

Touring around in Hellroaring Basin during a nice blue sky window we had.

Sonny getting more face shots on the south side of Radio Tower.

Sonny, don’t get lost in there!

Sonny playing in the snow.

A happy Sonny after some nice powder and sunshine.

Cold blue day

With temps still well below zero it’s hard to ski longer than a few hours. I hear its going to warm up to zero one of these days. Here are some photos from yesterday up at Whitefish Moutnain Resort. Sonny and I hiked Lodi for some fresh tracks, then I photographed my friend Marc blowing off the summit house.

Enjoy.

Ski photos before the blizzard

Today the resort is closed because of high winds and drifting snow. Afternoon summit temperature is -15 F with winds gusting 50+ mph. We debated skinning up for a run but will put it off till Sunday. Here are some shots from Friday before this weekends blizzard.

Enjoy.

Whitefish photographer David Marx frees it on Lodi Ridge an inbounds hike at Whitefish Mountain Resort. He is 6′4" so its deeper than it looks.

Endless Winter 2008 – CHECK

Now I can finally check of my Endless Winter 2008. The year I skied every month within 75 miles of my house. More like 67 miles, just need to break out the GPS to see my final mileage. I may have started something here… skiing every month. Why not go for 2 years? I have a friend Dan’l who has skied 120 months strait around the world. I’m just going for the local aspect of it. I’m at 13 months now and building. Another side note is I hit my year of skiing and year of practicing hot yoga 6 days a week at the same time ~ Namasté.

December was completed Sunday night with a skin up the resort and ski down. Then come Tuesday it was with the help of these nifty little things call chair lifts. It has been over 8 months since I last road one to ski. I have had no problem making some early season groomer runs on the backside of my local mountain WMR Whitefish Mountain Resort . Those deep powder days will soon come. We got a late start to winter here and I’ hoping for a few more feet to fill in the rest of the resort and backcountry.

Below are some photos from our skin up on Sunday and the first powder day at WMR on Dec. 10, 2008 showcasing telemark skiers Erick Gelbke, "Big" Dave Erickson and Marc Fredrickson on snowboard.

Enjoy.

Amy, Kim and Sonny skinning up Sunday night.

Erick found a nice line with 5" of fresh snow.

Big Dave freeing it, almost a face shot.

Dave and Erick wondering who will go first.

Marc said he loves his new snowboard. I bet the new snow doesn’t hurt either.

WMR Resort Guide 08/09 – Photos

The Whitefish Mountain Resort winter guides are hot off the press. Three of my images were selected for use in the 2008/2009 winter guide for Whitefish Mountain Resort aka Big Mountain.

One of my aerial photos from last season was the cover image showing the front side with Glacier National Park peaks in the background. The image was taken near dusk.

Two of my shots on page 15. Eric in the powder and Sonny by himself on a run.

One of my images of ski school was used on the left of page 16.
