Late June ski and fish
*Note, I plan on skiing every month in 2008.
What a day we had Wednesday in the northern Whitefish Range near the Canadian boarder. This is what summer is all about… skiing and fishing, right?
We had a record snowfall this year in the Whitefish Range with the local resort getting 500+ inches during winter and spring 2007/2008 meaning we have tons of snow up high. One of my good friends and ski buddy, Sonny, boot packed with telemark gear up to a few mountain lakes that had some buried north facing chutes. Most of these chutes dumped out right in the lake, as seen below. We also had fishing gear with us, so we fished while we scouted lines above the lake. After catching our limit of 15-20 inch trout we headed up this chute for a great line. It wasn’t rocky at all, the “dirt” was pine debris. The chute was steep with all the trees bent over downhill. We guessed it to be around 40 degrees. Summer is a good time to hit these steep lines with firm snow. The lake breaking up below was hard not to look at as we made our turns down.
