The mountains are filling in nice

For what started out as a dry and warm fall quickly turned in to deep days in the mountains. It started snowing the first week of Dec. 2008 and hasn’t really let up.  We have more than 155" season to date storm total with a base of 81" on the summit of Big Mountain on Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish, MT. All that snow has been fun to play on.  Some of our backcountry trips have been on hold with current snow pack conditions.

Below are some photos from the past week and holiday season at the resort. Enjoy.

Amy playing around in the powder on East Rim.

Amy getting popped up from a log, fun times.

Josh plowing down Whiteys and wondering why he moved to Iowa.

Josh’s first four runs this morning were all first tracks. It pays to know locals.

Amy making a turn in Gray’s Golf Course with a hint of a sundog in the top right.

Beth loving the powder and blue skies.

Amy hoping she doesn’t hit the photographer.

Beth can’t get enough of that fresh snow.

Mike hammering a turn in Hellroaring Basin.

Mike ridge running above Picture Chutes before airing a cliff.

Bluebird day ending with fresh pow turns. Mike goes airborne in Evan’s Heaven.

Endless Winter 2008 – CHECK

Now I can finally check of my Endless Winter 2008. The year I skied every month within 75 miles of my house. More like 67 miles, just need to break out the GPS to see my final mileage. I may have started something here… skiing every month. Why not go for 2 years? I have a friend Dan’l who has skied 120 months strait around the world. I’m just going for the local aspect of it. I’m at 13 months now and building. Another side note is I hit my year of skiing and year of practicing hot yoga 6 days a week at the same time ~ Namasté.

December was completed Sunday night with a skin up the resort and ski down. Then come Tuesday it was with the help of these nifty little things call chair lifts. It has been over 8 months since I last road one to ski. I have had no problem making some early season groomer runs on the backside of my local mountain WMR Whitefish Mountain Resort . Those deep powder days will soon come. We got a late start to winter here and I’ hoping for a few more feet to fill in the rest of the resort and backcountry.

Below are some photos from our skin up on Sunday and the first powder day at WMR on Dec. 10, 2008 showcasing telemark skiers Erick Gelbke, "Big" Dave Erickson and Marc Fredrickson on snowboard.

Enjoy.

Amy, Kim and Sonny skinning up Sunday night.

Erick found a nice line with 5" of fresh snow.

Big Dave freeing it, almost a face shot.

Dave and Erick wondering who will go first.

Marc said he loves his new snowboard. I bet the new snow doesn’t hurt either.

Marc getting some tea from Sam at the Big Drift in the village with snow falling.

Erick cruising the groomers.

Dusk from the resort.

WMR Resort Guide 08/09 – Photos

The Whitefish Mountain Resort winter guides are hot off the press. Three of my images were selected for use in the 2008/2009 winter guide for Whitefish Mountain Resort aka Big Mountain.

One of my aerial photos from last season was the cover image showing the front side with Glacier National Park peaks in the background. The image was taken near dusk.

Two of my shots on page 15. Eric in the powder and Sonny by himself on a run.

One of my images of ski school was used on the left of page 16.

Montana Magazine Cover Photo

If you have a chance to look at the current Montana Magazine (November/December 2008 issue). The cover photo was taken February 2008 at dusk while I was shooting Big Sky Resort. For those who don’t have access to Montana Magazine below are both the cover and my original image.
